On September 10 and 11, Roanoke College and Williams Memorial Baptist Church will be sponsoring a series of events on the topic of “Environmental Justice.” Featured speaker is the Rev. Dr. Faith Harris, Professor of Theology and Grassroots Activism at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond. Dr. Harris is also Chair of the Virginia Interfaith Power and Light (VIPAL), an interfaith environmental advocacy organization who will be speaking at the Roanoke College Chapel at 6:30 pm Tuesday, Sept. 10. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, she will be meeting with faith leaders from various traditions for a luncheon hosted by Williams Memorial Baptist Church at 12 noon when she will be presenting information on VIPAL and suggesting ways for faith communities to engage in the cause of environmental justice.
On September 11 at 7 pm, Williams Memorial Baptist Church will host an interfaith panel discussion, “People of Faith and Environmental Justice: The Intersection of Theology and Ecology.” The panel will be moderated by Dr. Laura Hartman of Roanoke College and include: Dr. Faith Harris, Dr. Saleem Ahmed of Masjid AnNur, Rabbi Kathy Cohen of Temple Emmanuel, Dr. Paul Hinlicky of Roanoke College, and Dr. David Jones of Williams Memorial. This event is free and open to the public at the church located at 2105 Carroll Ave., NW.
