Dr. Pepper Park hosted the Star City Cornhole World Record Attempt on Sunday, April 30th. This event was a fundraiser for the Knights Booster Foundation. The World Record that was broken was for the “World’s Largest Tournament” said, Toby Smith cornhole professional who was in charge of running the tournament.
“I’ve been working to grow the game of cornhole here in the Roanoke Valley, and beyond, for a long time,” “I have a lot of fun playing cornhole, hosting events, and meeting new people, but I really enjoy when I can use what I’ve built to help others. I can remember being a little kid and looking at all of the pictures and stories in the Guinness Book, and it’s pretty cool that I will now have a record of my own in there. Add in that attempting this record produced a benefit for kids in the area, and this event was really something special. I’m happy and proud that I was a part of it,” Smith said.
The current Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Tournament” is 320 participants or 160 teams. The Star City Cornhole World Record Attempt yielded 164 teams. There were an additional 12 teams that pre-registered, paid and did not play. Pending verification of evidence by Guinness, this will break the current World Record.
“The Star City Cornhole World Record Attempt all came together when Waynette Anderson with Dr. Pepper Park put me in contact with Toby Smith of Star City Cornhole stated, Melissa Dowdy, event organizer of the Knights Booster Foundation. After several months of discussions and meetings we were able to find a fundraising solution.
Dr. Pepper Park works with several area non-profits through their volunteer program. Last year they donated more than $12,000 to area non-profits. “We are a community venue and love the opportunity to give back to those in our area that support us!” said Waynette Anderson, President and Owner of Dr. Pepper Park. She adds, “This event was a true collaboration of 3 groups wanting to help kids in the Roanoke Valley. We donated the space for their event and considered it a privilege to host such an exciting event!”
