Teyauna Hayes was approved for the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program in October 2017. She grew up on Hanover Ave. in NW Roanoke City so, when she found out her new Habitat home would be built in the 1800 block of Hanover Ave., she was delighted! Her new next-door neighbor is also a family friend, so this has been a particularly uplifting project!
When Habitat for Humanity decided to partner with WSLS-10 to build the 3rd house in partnership during Spring and Summer 2018, Habitat chose Teyauna and her family to be featured in the news coverage that documented every step of her future home as it was constructed between May-July of this year.
The project kicked off on May 9 with a Wall Raising Ceremony that included Mayor Sherman Lea, WSLS and City of Roanoke staffs and the 9 corporate sponsors who agreed to pitch in with financial and volunteer resources to help complete this home.
Teyauna’s Home Dedication Ceremony was held Friday, July 20 with part of the ceremony airing live on the WSLS evening news. A free block party and cookout followed the ceremony as neighbors and supporters enjoyed taking a tour of Teyauna’s beautiful new home!
