For several weeks, Roanoke native Shawnte Walker knew exactly what she was going to be doing on the evening of July 23 – experiencing one of the greatest Gospel talents of this era, Jekalyn Carr, up close at the Jefferson Center. When the moment finally arrived, Walker says that she and her friends ended up spending more time standing on their feet than sitting in their seats.
One thing that every musician wants when they are performing on stage is audience engagement and Jekalyn had that in abundance from start to finish. The band and back- up singers were just as impressive too.
“During her set, she performed many songs that have served as the soundtrack to my life at various points. Jekalyn’s music makes me feel powerful. Her words helped get me through some dark chapters in my life,” Walker said.
A sizable crowd filled up Shaftman Performance Hall where Carr’s opener was Nefateria Hash, the youngest of six children and a Star City resident, who has won countless awards and competitions, most notably “Roanoke’s Got Talent.” No stranger to collaborating with others, Hash has worked with such talents as Cici Winans, Jermaine Dolly, Lecrae, and Taraji P. Henson throughout her career. Her EP, “It’s My Season,” is available on all digital platforms.
“I want to let you know that the atmosphere is already set,” Hash told the audience before adding, “I am grateful to be here with you tonight to share the power of God’s love.”
Carr’s life story is thoroughly documented in her music. Born in 1997, she grew up in Mem- phis, Tenn. At age five, Carr began serving in her church’s choir and by the time she was 15, her single “Greater is Coming” had already debuted on Billboard’s Gospel Music Top Ten Charts.
For nearly a decade, Carr has been among the most successful Gospel musicians in the country. In addition to garnering four Grammy Award nominations, Carr also has nine Billboard No. 1 hits. A critically ac- claimed content creator, Carr is also a radio host, actress, author, and entrepreneur. Eight years ago, EBONY Magazine named the creative one as one of the 100 most influential people in America.
Standing just 5’2, Carr’s voice is as distinctive as it is powerful; her musical talents have taken her all over the world. She came on stage and was met with an extended standing ovation. Nearly halfway through her set, she brought out event organizer Cheryl Daniels to express her gratitude for all her efforts in bringing the show to town.
“I give God all the glory for being able to stand in front of you today. When I think of his goodness, I can’t help but think of all the great things that he has done for me,” she said.
Several people told the Roanoke Tribune that her performance brought new life to the albums in her discography. Explained Brittany Washington, “It’s not every day that such a talent comes to Roanoke. I would have paid twice the amount for a ticket to see her in person. I’m sure I speak for most people in attendance when I say that her words speak to the soul.”
Carr’s book, “You Will Win: Inspirational Strategies To Help You Overcome,” shares personal stories of overcoming life obstacles, breaking mental barriers, and strategies to promote a triumph Christian life. More information can be found at iamjekalyncarr.com.
