This July, The Market Gallery features an exciting show of 5 mature artists working in 4 different mediums: painter Anne Way Bernard; printmaker Nancy Dahlstrom; potter Steve Mitchell; and mixed media artists Barbara Norman-Lashley and Kim Lashley-Sutliff. Come join in the Art By Night opening reception, Friday, July 1, 5:30-9 p.m. Several of the artists will discuss their work between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. The common thread among these artists is their profound appreciation of the natural world.
Anne Way Bernard’s almost 3-dimensional oil landscapes of the Southwest Virginia countryside include high contrasts, layering, and loose brushwork. Inspired by the hillside landscape around her Botetourt studio, Nancy Dahlstrom experiments with printing techniques, adding pastels and drawing elements to her etchings and mezzotints. The colorful crystalline glazes of Steve Mitchell’s porcelain vases, jars and bowls resemble the polished surfaces of cowry and olive shells.
Last but not least are the witty wall sculptures of mother-and-daughter artists Barbara Norman-Lashley and Kim Lashley-Sutliff, creating garden motifs from recycled books. The show runs from June 26 through July 23.
The Market Gallery, a regional artists’ cooperative, is open 10 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday and is located at 23 Salem Ave., corner of Wall St and Salem Ave in Roanoke’s historic downtown market.
