The Roanoke Branch NAACP is proud to announce that four area youth will represent the Branch at the National ACT-SO Competition in Detroit, MI from July 18-21.
The local competition was held at William Fleming High School on March 30 at which the participating youth displayed excitement and confidence.
The four goldmedal winners and their respective categories are: Chadwick Davilsaint – Performing Arts-Dramatics; Antoine Jefferson – Humanities -Original Essay; London Paige – STEM- Chemistry/Biochemistry and Duy Pham-Performing Arts-Music-Vocal Contemporary.
We are so proud of all of the Olympians that included: Ashlyn Guerrant–Vocal Contemporary; Tiarra Johnson- Music-Vocal Contemporary; Tramelle Lee- Performing Arts-Dance; Kiara Trent-Performing Arts-Dance (contemporary) and Kaheem Combs- Vocal Contemporary.
The Olympians are able to compete in up to 3 categories. This year the following Olympians competed in two categories: Antoine Jefferson (Dramatics), Chadwick Davilsaint (Vocal Contemporary) and Ashlyn Guerrant (Painting). All of the Olympians received certificates with Olympian London Paige receiving the “Most Dedicated” plaque for her efforts. The committee members are extremely grateful to the judges, the parents and everyone who assisted in the local competition; and especially to principal, Archie Freeman!
Preparations are currently being made to take the gold medalists to Detroit, MI. We are grateful for the financial donation made by “Women United for Community Action.” In addition, as more help is needed to take these youth to the competition, our annual “Jazz on the Lawn” fundraiser is currently being planned for Sunday, July 7, on the beautiful lawn of Mr. Clint Barlow on Cove Road. Donations are also being accepted to help fund this effort.
Hopefully, those persons who will attend the “NAACP Annual Citizen of the Year Banquet” on Friday, May 31, will be able to hear our vocal contemporary gold medal winner perform.
