William Fleming High School was the center of excitement on Saturday, May 7 as the Roanoke Branch NAACP’s 2016 local ACT-SO Competition was underway! From 8am to 1pm youth, parents, community volunteers, judges and branch members across the Roanoke Valley were involved in competing, eating, celebrating, talking and enjoying the experience.
This year, students competed in 8 categories within the areas of Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Humanities. All participants were assessed by qualified judges and given points based upon a rubric for each category that total 100 points. The medal winners were based upon the total points received according to NAACP’s National ACT-SO’s guidelines. The medal winners must fall in the following range: Gold: 95-100 points; Silver: 90-94 points; Bronze: 85-89 points.
There were 3 Gold Medal Winners, all in the area of Visual Arts: From William Fleming High School- NeKeah Stokes, Drawing and LaRon Glenn, Painting; and from Patrick Henry High School- Monica Hackett, Photography and James Smith Jr. won a Bronze Medal in Music Classical/Instrument.
Other participants were: Vocal Contemporary-Tiarra Johnson, Windell Bratton, Jazmia Witcher and Christina Seratus; Poetry (written and expressive)- Malaysja Copeland and Ashawnte Anderson.
The ACT-SO committee deeply appreciates all of the participants, parents, coaches, mentors, judges, and all who helped to make the event a success.
The annual “Jazz On The Lawn,” an ACT-SO Fund Raiser, is planned for June 26 on Cove Road-Clint Barlow’s lawn. The ACT-SO Olympians will need the community’s support with funds and support with this event.
