After a historic Democratic primary turnout in the bitter cold on Saturday, Feb. 13 of this year and a good turnout for the presidential primary, a high voter turnout is anticipated for the May 3 Roanoke City Council and Mayoral election. The weather is warmer and the lines should move faster than at the Democratic Firehouse Primary. You are urged to come out and VOTE!
It is important that you know where your voting precinct is located, secure your transportation method and most importantly, bring your photo ID–plus a friend or others to vote!
You may be contacted after the election to comment on your voting experience. This is the time to decide if this new system works well or identify what needs to be changed in order to be ready for the presidential election in November. Let’s be mindful that local government has the greatest impact on our neighborhoods, economy, schools and all the services our communities rely upon.
The Voting Rights Act, signed into Law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on August 6, 1965, was aimed to overcome legal barriers at State and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
Let us honor the sacrifices of our ancestors by encouraging family and friends to join in voting on Tuesday, May 3. Let’s make history again with another great turnout!
