An appreciative audience witnessed a variety of talents displayed from high school students at the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.’s 2015 Annual Talent Hunt Contest on Friday, February 27, 2015 in the William Fleming HS auditorium. Talents ranged from instrumental (double bass), vocal contemporary, vocal classical and dance.
The winners, Kai Washington-Brown First-Place; Devin Arrington, Second Place and Guy Smith, Third Place, were among 9 contestants participating in the local competition. The winners won $250.00, $175.00 and $100.00 respectively.
The local winner, Kai Washington-Brown, a sophomore at William Fleming performed her choreography to “Beautiful” by India Ari. Kai was also a 2014 NAACP ACT-SO gold medal winner in the dance category. She will represent Alpha Gamma at the Third District Competition on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the 3rd District meeting which will be held at the Sheraton, Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, VA with an opportunity to win the $1,000.00 grand prize.
The second place winner, Devin Arrington, double bass player is a senior at Patrick Henry High School and Guy Smith, contemporary vocalist, is a senior at William Fleming High School. The outstanding performances by every participant were well received by the audience. The other participants were: Denzel Hudson & Nolan Smith, Forest Park Academy; Amanda Peterson, Kanaya Webb and Josh Patrick from William Fleming HS and Dominique Thomas, Patrick Henry HS. All were to be commended for his or her performance and each participant received a beautiful plaque from the organization.
The audience was entertained with a wonderful selection by sisters, Kameron and Kai Washington-Brown and piano selections by Mrs. Anita Wilson. The MC for the evening was Mrs. Gloria Randolph-King.
The men of Omega Psi Phi have been sponsoring the talent hunt for many years and are grateful for all participants and the community’s support provided especially by adjudicators: Carolyn Patterson, Beverly Keeling and Gloria Manns. The Committee chair was Omega Reginald Duckett, Sr. Members of his committee were Omegas Joseph Hancock, Maceo Toney and John Brown. Other Omegas were in attendance and helped as ushers, program participants, tabulator, timekeeper, photographer and stage hands. Darnell Glover is the Gamma Alpha Basileus.
