Local Jack and Jill chapter honored among “Best of the Best” at convention
The Roanoke Valley Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. received third place honors in the “Best of the Best Outstanding Programming” category at the organization’s 43rd Red Biennial Convention held July 24-29 in Kansas City, MO.
The recognition was for the local Chapter’s sponsorship of the 2018 Annual HBCU College Fair, hosted in conjunction with the National Hampton Alumni Association – Roanoke Chapter and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture. Jack and Jill mothers Lori Baker-Lloyd, Kianna Price Marshall, Lorena Taylor-Rollins Wilson, Melanie Hayden Glover, and Sophia Berkel led the programming efforts for the event.
The Fair held February 17 at William Fleming High School, focused on: creating awareness and excitement for HBCU attendance; providing information on HBCU enrollment options and distributing application and college financing information.
Over 200 individuals pre-registered for the event with more than 300 attending. The event resulted in 17 graduating seniors being accepted into their HBCU of choice on-site.
The local chapter represents over 20 mothers and over 40 children and teens locally and in the New River Valley.
