Roanoke Parks and Recreation (PLAY Roanoke) is offering two free events on January 29, 2022: A 3 vs. 3 Basketball Tournament at the Berglund Center, followed by a Battle of the DJs after-party at the Eureka Recreation Center. These events are free to the community to participate in and attend and are part of the Star City Safe Initiative to offer expanded services and access to public facilities to keep our youth and neighborhoods safe through programming and engagement.
The basketball tournament, beginning at noon, is open to 32 teams and broken into two age divisions, 14-17 years, and 18 years and up. Participants will receive a free food voucher to redeem at the Berglund Center’s snack bar, and the winning team of each age group gets a $500 Visa gift card to split between each other.
After the tournament, Parks and Recreation will host a Battle of the DJs after party. A handful of DJs will compete against one another at the Eureka Recreation Center. The format will be similar to a silent disco, where spectators will have headphones and can switch channels to listen to the different DJs and vote on their favorite. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m., and Parks and Recreation will provide food and refreshments for all attendees.
“Our department is working hard to host fun, free events for the community. This tournament and the DJ battle are next in a long line of Star City Safe programs aimed at providing safe access to programming and public facilities to young adults in the City,” said Roanoke Parks and Recreation Director Michael Clark. “We’re excited to see these events come together and look forward to seeing the positive impact they have on our community.”
