In remembrance of the people who marched and died for everyone to have the right to vote, The Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) will hold its annual “Remembering the Selma to Montgomery March” Memorial Service. Reflecting on the series of marches that lasted for 18 days starting on March 7, 1965 (also known as “Bloody Sunday” because of the lives that were taken) and ended on March 25, 1965.
At this service all candidates currently running for (elected office) with the state or in Roanoke City are invited to speak. Each one will be given 5 minutes to tell why they are running and what they plan to do for the citizens of Roanoke City if elected.
This is a free event and everyone is invited to “come in peace!”
This event will be held between 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Statue located at 1st St. NW. Roanoke.
