The Rescue Mission is calling on young artists attending the Sidewalk Art Show this weekend to design its’ next Drumstick DASH T-shirt. Each year, the Mission selects a turkey drawn by a child to adorn the shirt that is given to as many as 15,000 walkers and runners participating in the Thanksgiving Day 5K in Downtown Roanoke. This year, the Mission has partnered with the Taubman Museum of Art for the drawing contest.
“We’re thrilled that the Taubman Museum is hosting us in its beautiful atrium,” says Rescue Mission Director of Development Tracy Altizer. “What better place for children to create art than in an art museum. We can’t wait to see some great-looking turkeys.”
“We are in the business of bringing people and art together!” said Della Watkins, executive director of the Taubman Museum of Art. “We love that the artwork in the Taubman Museum of Art will inspire children to create imaginative designs for the Rescue Mission’s Drumstick DASH T-shirt design competition. They are a valued neighbor and partner in our community.”
Also for the first time this year, the Rescue Mission will display the contest entries throughout the month of August at 2nd Helpings Gallery. The public is invited to attend a reception on Saturday, Aug. 20 and cast a vote for a winner from among the top 10 finalists. The winner will be announced at the end of the reception, which will include complimentary refreshments from 2nd Helpings Café.
“Kids love to see their artwork on display,” says Altizer, “but how many get to see their creations displayed in a gallery? This will be a fun event for families and the whole community.”
Children are invited to draw their best gobblers inside the Taubman Atrium during the Sidewalk Art Show on June 4 and 5 from 10am-5pm.
