They call them the Dynamic Duo. Toni Belton has been principal of Roanoke Academy for Math and Science (RAMS) for sixteen years. Michele Micael has been assistant principal for two years. Together, they make a powerful team.
“We believe in our children. We believe all children can learn. We don’t just say that,” said Principal Belton.
Toni Belton grew up in Roanoke. She is a proud graduate of William Fleming High School and was voted Most Athletic by her classmates. Upon graduating high school, she went away to college, got married, had two children and was living a happy life in Northern Virginia but something was missing.
She returned to Roanoke in 2002 as principal of Roanoke Academy.
“I feel I am needed here at Roanoke Academy. I felt I could make a difference coming back here. Since I grew up in Roanoke, these are my people. My mom lived right around the corner. This is home,” proclaimed Belton.
While Belton brings the experience, Micael brings plenty of new ideas. She is outgoing, he is quiet and low key. The Kansas native says he feels right at home in Roanoke and calls Ms. Belton his big sister. “We make important decisions together and I know her expectations,” says Micael. Principal Belton believes Micael has made a significant impact in the two years he has been assistant principal at Roanoke Academy, especially with the male students. “I want someone who loves the children. I know he does,” says Belton.
Belton and Micael make a good team and both refuse to take all the credit. They agree that working with an amazing staff is truly rewarding and one reason Roanoke Academy is fully accredited.
