The Roanoke Arts Commission (RAC) is seeking up to 10 artists to exhibit in the third AIR: (Art in Roanoke), a temporary sculpture exhibition running May 16, 2015 through November 15, 2016 in Elmwood Park.
Past AIR projects have spread art across the city, but all artwork for this project will be placed along the Art Walk in Elmwood Park. To tie in with the urban yet natural location, the theme of he show is “The Natural City.”
The decision to place temporary art in the Elmwood Art Walk is based on the results of citizen input gathered in 2014 in the process of updating the city’s Public Art Plan. According to a survey of citizens, the top desired location for public art was downtown. Both free-standing sculpture and temporary art displays ranked among the top five in desired types of art,” says Tom McKeon, Roanoke Arts Commission chair. “We also heard that diverse artwork is wanted and a temporary show leads nicely to capturing diversity.
Artists chosen to participate will receive a stipend of up to $4,500 per selected artwork. In addition, one artist will receive a $1,000 Best in Show award. Voting will take place Memorial Day Weekend during Festival in the Park.
