Seven members of the Roanoke Chapter of the Continental Societies, Inc. traveled to Virginia Beach, VA to attend the 32ND Mid-Atlantic Region’s annual meeting on Friday, March 11-12. The informative and exciting 2-day event included financial and leadership training workshops on Friday evening and a business meeting and delicious luncheon on Saturday.
The Regional luncheon is always community oriented and serves as an opportunity to award the MAR chapters with awards for the hard work completed during the year. During the luncheon, the Boys Choir of Hampton Roads sang several beautiful selections. In addition, Peter and Carla Lewis were present to receive the $1,000.00 donation check to help continue the Apple Ridge Farms program for children.
The Roanoke Chapter was recognized with a certificate and a trophy for its participation in the African-American Read-in for reading over 1,000 books. Certificates of recognition and merit were also received for the local chapter’s participation in the Red Ribbon Initiative; Service to Youth; submission for the Marquina Spencer Outstanding Chapter Award; participation in the Red Ribbon Initiative. A Certificate of Merit for our Service to Youth, for submission for the Gertrude Brown Logan and Edna Brown Prunty Outstanding Camp Award, and for HEER Plus Arts and Humanities. The chapter had submitted a regional scholarship application from Jasmine Armster who received a gift of a sheet set to help with her college experience.
Continentals who received special awards were: For continuous service to Children and Youth, – Quo Vadis Washington-Brown – 5 Years; Patricia Baker, 10 Years; Barbara Brooks,10 Years and Hazel Jones,15 Years. Each Continental received a certificate and a pin. Continental Patricia Duckett Baker, recipient of the Unsung Sister Award for showing sisterhood above and beyond the call of duty, received a certificate and plant. Gloria Randolph-King was presented a gift for serving as Regional Chaplain.
The highlight on Saturday was the song and dance routine prepared by the Roanoke Chapter to invite all of the chapters to attend the 33rd regional meeting to be held in Roanoke in 2017. The ladies performed to their version of “You’re a shining star.” This delighted the attendees and hopefully many will attend the Regional meeting in Roanoke next year. The Continentals in attendance were: Nancy Andrews, Loretta Freeman, Linda Journiette, Donna Lee, Gloria Randolph-King, Quo Vadis Washington-Brown and Lorena Wilson. Continental Guy Rev. Paul Andrews was also in attendance.
The Roanoke Continentals are a part of a public service, nonprofit national organization founded in 1956 by a group of women who were committed to giving time and effort for the benefit of children and youth. Since that time, over 58 chapters have been installed with 42 active chapters in 17 states including, the District of Columbia and Bermuda. The MAR has13 chapters from North Carolina (Durham, Goldsboro, New Bern, Wilmington) and Virginia (Norfolk-Virginia-Beach, Matthews, Newport News, Northern Virginia, Richmond, Roanoke, Tri-Cities) and South Carolina (Charleston).
The Roanoke Chapter is always looking for ladies who want to make a difference in the lives of children and want to be a part of a sisterhood with like-minded women.
