President Donna Lee and immediate past President Gloria Randolph-King received a beautiful plaque honoring the Roanoke Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc. for 50 years of dedicated community service to children at the 59th National Conclave held in Eatontown, New Jersey.
The Roanoke Continentals are a a part of a public service, nonprofit national organization founded in 1956 by a group of women who were committed to giving time and effort for the benefit of children and youth. Since that time, over 58 chapters have been installed with 42 active chapters in 17 states including, the District of Columbia and Bermuda. Over the past five years alone, the national organization has reached close to two million children.
In 1965, twelve ladies from Roanoke formed a chapter and joined this national organization. Florine Taylor Fulford and Florence Lewis Prunty, both deceased, spearheaded this chapter’s formation. Mrs. Prunty became the Continental’s National President in 1967.
For fifty years, the Roanoke chapter has focused on the national symbol, an outstretched hand holding 2 children. This is to emphasize that Continental women know that regardless of wherever they are, they extend their hands to help others and show that CONTINENTALS CARE.
