The Roanoke Chapter of The Links, Inc. held an end-of-school year event for student participants of the chapter’s partnership program with CAFE (Cultural Arts For Excellence). Since 2013, the chapter of has been working with CAFE, an after-school program for 6th – 8th graders.
The CAFE program works with community partners including the Roanoke Links chapter that mentors, tutors and exposes children to all forms of art and culture, including language arts particularly Spanish as a second language. The Chapter also conducts anti-bullying, healthy eating and etiquette and social skills workshops for CAFE students.
The traditional culminating event, held June 5 at El Toreo Mexican Restaurant, serves as a congratulatory send-off to recognize students’ achievements and participation. This year’s activities included fun with piñatas students made at a “History of the Piñata” workshop earlier this year, and an opportunity to put Spanish language lessons into practice.
During the June 5 event the students presented Roanoke Links with gifts, a cake and verbal expressions of thanks. Participating Links included Jennifer Alston, Tami Amos, Stephanie Jones, Kianna Marshall (chair) and Donna Robinson.
The Roanoke Chapter is one of 288 chapters of The Links, Inc. one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.
