The Roanoke Branch of the NAACP is excited about the 2015 local ACT-SO competition to be held on Saturday, April 18, at William Fleming High School from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The program THAT has been around for 35 years, is considered by some to be a cultural “best kept secret” and people are really talking about how great it is. Community leaders and volunteers serve as judges and supporters for the participants as they showcase their respective talents.
A participant may enter any three of the 26 categories in the areas of Sciences, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Entrepreneurship. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals are awarded the winners in each category with gold medal winners earning a free trip to the National ACT-SO Competition in Orlando, FL in July!
Roanoke Branch sponsored local competition 2005 winner, Patrick Curtis traveled to Wisconsin for the National competition and won a Bronze medal in the Physics category. In July 2014, two youth went to Las Vegas, NV to compete in the National Competition. One, Tyler Langhorne, returned with another Bronze medal in the Oratory category. This year the local group is seeking more winners to represent Roanoke at the National ACT-SO competition in Philadelphia, PA. The goal is to prepare them to be winners; “Not just talk about it” but “Be about it!” The leaders remind them–“If you KNOW SO, then ACT-SO!”
There are approximately 30 youth participating in the local competition which is a FREE event. Please come out and support them on Saturday, April 18! You will be surprised and pleased as this wonderful Olympics takes place at William Fleming High School.
