Delegate Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke) has resigned from his leadership post as Secretary of the House Democratic Caucus in Virginia’s House of Delegates.
Rasoul notified House Democratic Leader David Toscano and House Democratic Caucus Chair Charniele Herring this morning. Rasoul had been elected to the position by other members of the caucus in December of 2015.
In his resignation, Rasoul highlighted the need for major changes in the wake of last week’s general election. “We have been discussing for years the need for change, and now the voters have clearly spoken,” said Rasoul.
“While change takes time, it is critical that we begin a massive overhaul. The caucus seems to have little intention of entertaining that. As a Democrat, I want to use my energy toward efforts that restore trust among the people. That can only be accomplished by pushing radical change,” he said.
While no longer in a leadership role, Delegate Rasoul will remain a member of the House Democratic Caucus.
