On Sunday, May 10, Mrs. Geraldine Dowe Whaley was honored as Mother of the Year at Shiloh Baptist Church in Salem. Rev. Adrian Dowell, senior pastor, presented Mrs. Whaley with a plaque to honor the momentous occasion. He remarked that she was the oldest member of Shiloh and acknowledged her numerous contributions in many of the church’s organizations throughout her life.
Among them she has been an enthusiastic participant in the Gospel Chorus, the Enos Glaspie Scholarship Fund, Junior Maids and Matrons, the Birthday Club, and is one of the captains of the Homecoming Committee and the Fuel Rally.
Mrs. Whaley credits her parents, Lewis and Lula Dowe for the lessons taught from the Bible and the values instilled in her during early childhood.
Those celebrating the occasion and giving tributes of love and appreciation included her daughter, Judy Roberts, grandson, Brandon Roberts. Her brothers, Douglas Dowe and Alfred Dowe, Sr., who shared reflections about their “big hearted sister.” Also joining in the celebration were sister, Frankye Dowe Warren; sister-in-law, Altha Dowe; nephew, Michael Dowe all from the Washington, DC area; nephew, Douglas Dowe, Jr.; niece, Gale Dowe; cousins, friends and Shiloh Family among others.
