WINONA LAKE, IN – Mya Brown, former standout track star from Roanoke’s William Fleming High School, has made a name for herself at Grace College.
Brown has a number of accomplishments at William Fleming, highlighted by three qualifications in 2014 at the Virginia indoor state championships and four qualifications to the outdoor championships. At the outdoor state meet, she finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 46.10 seconds and also placed 13th in the triple jump. Her personal best times include 15.67 seconds in the 100 hurdles, 37-feet-5 in the triple jump and 17.8 in the long jump.
After her first collegiate meet, freshman Mya Brown was honored as the NCCAA and Crossroads League Female Field Athlete of the Week. In her first collegiate meet at the Defiance Invitational held on January 24,2015. Brown broke a 15-year-old school record in the triple jump by over a foot, winning the meet at 10.93 meters. She went on to break a 17-year-old long jump record at 5.07m and also took sixth place in the 60m hurdles. Brown met the NCCAA qualifying standard in all three events. She was also a member of the 4×200 relay team that finished second with a time of 1:51.32.
“We are thrilled to have Mya Brown join our program,” said Grace head coach Jeff Raymond. “She has the ability to make an immediate impact on our team and should be very competitive in several events on the conference and hopefully national levels.”
On Friday, Feb. 6, Mya will be running in the Westmont Sunshine Open in Santa Barbara, CA. All are pulling for her continued excellence.
Brown’s mother is Endia Saleh and her stepfather is Reginald Strange. She plans to major in physical therapy during her time at Grace College.
