In order to increase community awareness a group of civic leaders are responding to the escalation in violence so far this year by hosting a free community cook-out 12:00 noon – 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 27 in Washington Park, lower level shelter. There will be free food, speakers, music, information and activities for all ages.
The event is being sponsored by Stop the Violence Star City, a group that was organized in Roanoke to address the recent explosion of violence in this city. Guest speaker will be Kayla Hicks, of Virginians for Responsible Gun Laws (from VA Beach).
So far this year Roanoke has experienced more homicides than last year’s total. There is an imminent and urgent need for our city to unite to stem the tide of this violence. The diverse group is made up of people from the communities who have come together to address the root issues underlying this surge of violence. in hopes of developing ideas to prevent the loss of any more lives.
The group meets every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Washington Park lower level, meetings are open to the public.
