At 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, the City’s Task Force to Reduce Gun Violence will host an event, “Roanoke Remembers: Healing the Wounds of Gun Violence in our Community,” in William Fleming High School’s Dickinson Auditorium. Doors will open at 4 p.m. to allow time for residents to bring photos of friends and loved ones whose lives have been lost by gun violence, to place on a memorial wall in the lobby of the school.
The memorial wall activity is intended to create a safe space for people to talk about their experience of losing someone to gun violence. Grief counselors will be on-site to listen and guide conversations, if desired.
A program including interfaith prayers, poems, creative dance, story sharing and song will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the auditorium to honor and remember those who have died and to offer healing support to their families and all who have been impacted in our community.
Photos for the memorial wall may be submitted the day of the event and placed on the memorial wall, or a digital photo may be submitted by email prior to the event to be included in video presentation of loved ones to be remembered, by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at clerk@roanokeva.gov.
