The heart beat of every American, high and low alike, and of every nation whose social, political and economic systems are dependent upon the U.S. economy as determined by the results of one of the most historic presidential election of our times.
As I observe the signs and reports of the final moments of this campaign I am reminded of my trip to Israel many years ago this very week. As the plane landed in TelAviv the flight pattern displayed on the back of the seats showed an arrow pointing one way to Gaza and Jerusalem and another the opposite direction to Haifa, our destination. Instantly the thought occurred, this way to war–the opposite direction to peace as war has been synonymous with the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem for many years while Haifa, although in the heart of warring territories, harbors the world center of the most divinely organized and orchestrated world-wide peace movement on earth.
In total contrast I had the unique experience of being one of a 20-member group of Virginians to accompany (then) Governor Linwood Holton to Offutt, NE in the late 70’s when the U.S. Military was individually inviting the governor of each state plus a group of 20 others from throughout that state, for a weekend of promoting the need for rebuilding and upgrading our American “defense” as opposed to prioritizing social and humanitarian programs of that post desegregation era. The weekend was comparable to 6 weeks of basic training within a 24-hour period. Through these two diametrically opposed experiences I was able to compare the scientific, technological and spiritual opposites of war and peace–and I have chosen peace.
But “Love is greater than peace for peace is founded upon love,” we are told in the Baha’i Holy Writings. Love is the objective point of peace and peace is the outcome of love. Until love is attained, peace cannot be.”
“…Love beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things,” states Paul in 1 Cor. 13. “Love never fails . . . but as for prophecies, they shall fail . . . and for knowledge, it shall vanish away. For knowledge is imperfect and prophesy is imperfect. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is not shall pass away…”
Baha’is believe that this is that Day! – and the (heart) beat goes on and on . . .
