The City of Roanoke has named Angelia Vernon as Director of Human Resources. Vernon has been serving as the Acting Director of Human Resources for several months, and has been with the organization since 2002. During that time, she held several positions in the Department of Human Resources including Volunteer Coordinator, Human Resources Recruiter,Human Resources Consultant, and Human Resources Manager.
As director, she oversees and directs all activities of the department, such as pay and classification; benefit program administration, training/organizational development, recruitment, performance management, and employee relations programs. Vernon holds a B.A. in political science from Spelman College Atlanta, GA, and a master’s degree in social science from Hollins University. She also holds a professional certification through the International Public Managers Association (IPMA-CP). Vernon is a native of Roanoke and a graduate of the Roanoke City Public Schools System. She is actively engaged in various civic organizations and her church, Shiloh Baptist. Angelia is married to John Vernon and the two have one daughter.
