Entertainment of a different sort came to the area as boxing fans got their fix Sat. March 12 at Roanoke’s Sheraton Hotel. The night of hand-to-hand combat was presented by the Elite Warrior Challenge Alliance.
The well-attended event was streamed live on Youtube and had a Vegas flair with a cash bar, food and souvenirs for sale. Originally, 7 fights were scheduled, 5 boxing and 2 Muay Thai (Marshall Arts) however both Muay Thai bouts were cancelled.
The event started one hour late but the first fight, a bout between Travis Davidson and Devar Ferhadi made up for the wait. Ferhardi basically roped-a-doped Davidson and landed 3 separate punishing jabs to the solar plexus that ended the fight for Davidson after 1 minute and 40 seconds. Ferhardi won by TKO.
The second fight of the evening was Roanoke’s own Latorie “The War Machine” Woodberry vs Rocque “The Rock Star” Zapata. The 2 warriors put on an exciting fight that went the distance and ended in a draw.
The main event did not let the audience down. It featured Scott “Cujo” Sigmond of Lynchburg and Chris “Irish Ghost” Fitzpatrick out of Columbia, SC. The bout went the 10-round distance whereby “Irish Ghost” was the constant aggressor. Sigmond as the favorite, mostly counterpunched throughout the entire fight. For the most part it looked like he gave too little too late, however the judges in the end, ruled in his favor
Overall the EWC Alliance debut match gave local boxing enthusiasts a night to remember. Hopefully it will lead to more events of this kind for those who enjoy the high impact sport.
