Bryce Ford Wheaton, son of Keith and Tracie Ford Wheaton, and grandson of Audrey & Walter Wheaton of Roanoke, was signed as an undrafted free agent immediately following the 2023 NFL Draft on Saturday, April 29th.
Bryce was a standout wide receiver for the West Virginia Mountaineers. After four seasons with the Mountaineers, Ford-Wheaton finished his career in West Virginia with 1,867 yards receiving on 143 receptions and 15 touchdowns.
WVU Head Coach Neal Brown stated: “If you look at his measurables, they’re off the charts. His numbers for the Combine, I think speak for themselves. I think you’ve seen some things that came out historically for what receivers’ numbers are that are guys that size and who he compares to and he’s in rare air. What I talk a lot about with Bryce is his growth and maturity both as a person and as a player.
If you saw him in the spring of ‘19 compared to where he was in the fall of ‘22 or where he is now, it’s night and day. It’s not even close. It’s not like he got a little better, if I showed you a film from the spring of ‘19 and told you that was Bryce, you wouldn’t believe that was him, and then how he’s worked over the last year. From January until now, he’s worked at a pro level and I think he’s earned the opportunity and he’s going to get it.
His best football is going to continue to be ahead of him and he’s going to be an asset, not just as a receiver but he’s going to be able to start on three special teams. He can play on the punt team, on the punt return team, and on the kickoff return team. I think that’s why people are excited about him.”
Bryce Ford Wheaton or BFW as he’s called, reports to Rookie Camp at the NY Giants facility on Thursday, May 4th. His Roanoke family is very proud of his accomplishments on and off the field and wishes him much success in his NFL career!
