The Eureka Recreation Center will undergo a $14.4 million redevelopment—the largest single-project investment in Roanoke Parks and Recreation history. The new 16,463-square-foot center will feature double the classroom space for afterschool programs, an enhanced gym, a new multi-use community room, and increased parking.
“The redevelopment of the Eureka Recreation Center is a turning point for the Northwest community,” said Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea. “We are not just building a facility; we are revitalizing a spirit of togetherness as we create a beautiful and energetic hub for community engagement, health, and personal growth.”
The project will begin in September 2024, with an anticipated completion by spring 2026. The City of Roanoke allocated $9.4 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to the project, and the City added an additional $5 million from capital improvement funding.
“By prioritizing investment in infrastructure like this, we are fostering a healthier, more connected neighborhood and providing a safe, welcoming space for all residents to enjoy,” Roanoke Assistant City Manager Angie O’Brien said. “The prioritizing of this recreation center is a testament to our dedication to improving the quality of life in Roanoke.”
The facility will be the City’s first building using geothermal energy and is currently on track for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. Additional highlights include solar panels, a spacious event lawn with an ADA walking path, a picnic pavilion, a redeveloped outdoor basketball court, interior and exterior public art opportunities, and 140 new trees.
“The redeveloped Eureka Recreation Center will offer many opportunities for youth and the young-at-heart to engage in team sports, one-on-one play, classes, programs, activities, games, and community events,” said Parks and Recreation Director Cindy McFall. “The facility’s improvements and modernization will rejuvenate the surrounding neighborhoods, creating a welcoming social hub for all residents.”
