Each year, Roanoke becomes more ethically diverse and creating a more vibrant community in the process. Local Colors exist to create a welcoming place by celebrating ethnic diversity in the Roanoke Valley and in turn, participate in making Roanoke a great place to live and work.
Features include: Annual festival at Elmwood Park that draws over 10,000 people to experience food, performances, and artifacts from other cultures. Approximately 50 different nationalities are highlighted at each festival. Culturally specific events that “show off” different heritages and create learning opportunities for Roanokers. Educational outreach and trainings on diversity and inclusion. Participation in community partnerships, such as Welcoming Week, aimed at inclusion of foreign-born people, and a resource for connecting ethnic groups with the schools and other organizations who desire inclusiveness. There is also no entrance fee for events to keep them as inviting as possible.
The 2020 Local Colors Festival will be 30th year, aptly named the Pearl Anniversary. Founder, Pearl Fu, envisioned an organization that would promote understanding and goodwill among foreign nationals who call Roanoke home. This is the legacy of Local Colors! We plan on making the upcoming 30th year a big deal because of it!
