Rev. Dr. Cedric E. Malone and the church family of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church recognized Deaconess Leslie Y. Terry as “Mother of the Year” on Sunday, May 10 during the 11:00 a.m. worship service.
Deaconess Terry was born and raised in Roanoke, the third child of Mrs. Shirley W. Ollie, educated in Roanoke City Public Schools and an alumnae of Lucy Addison High School. She started her Christian journey as a child and was baptized at High Street Baptist Church. She later joined Loudon Avenue Christian Church where she was an active member of the Usher Board and volunteered in various activities.
On November 4, 2000, Leslie married (Deacon Chairman) Samuel E. Terry and moved her membership to his church (Greater Mt. Zion Baptist) where she serves on the Deaconess Board (treasurer); as a member of the Youth Ministry, a Rally Captain, as secretary of the M.T. Coker Choir: serves on the Finance Committee, attends Sunday School, Wednesday Night Bible Study/Prayer meeting, and over the years, served in numerous other capacities and activities including on Anniversary and Watch Night Breakfast committees. She has always shown love and respect for her church family.
Leslie earned an associates degree in business management from Virginia Western Community College, and an Accounting degree from National Business College. She has been employed at The Roanoke Tribune for the past twelve years.
Deaconess Terry has two brothers, Alfred (Sharon) Fox III and Xavier (Vanessa) Fox. Her daughter, Lolita D. Day, and grandson, Jajuan A. Blaney reside in Atlanta, GA.
