For over 75 years, the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke has provided financial assistance to deserving college bound seniors from eight area high schools in Roanoke and Bedford. On Wednesday, June 23, with the generous support of American National Bank and Pinnacle Financial Partners, the Club continued that tradition by announcing this year’s scholarship winners. The honorees are Kiersten Reilly, Lily Bishop, and Joshua Campos, graduates of Northside High School; Catherine Thacker, graduate of Cave Spring High School; and Uyen Tran and Sarah Hall, graduates of William Fleming High School.
The Scholarship Committee reviewed 33 applications to determine the most qualified students. Due to continued COVID restrictions, applications were distributed electronically and committee meetings and interviews were conducted remotely. Kiwanis Club President Mike McEvoy was thrilled that due to increased fundraising and sponsorship efforts, the Kiwanis Club awarded $2,000 more than last year. President McEvoy said he “commends the students who worked so hard despite this year’s unique obstacles and is impressed with how each honoree excelled academically while, at the same time, involving themselves in many worthy service projects throughout their years in high school”.
$2,000 scholarships were awarded to Ms. Reilly, Ms. Thacker, and Ms. Hall. Ms. Reilly will attend Old Dominion University this fall for Psychology and Criminal Justice; Ms. Thacker is headed to Clemson University for Health Sciences; and Ms. Hall plans to attend the University of Virginia for Exercise Science & Kinesiology.
$3,000 scholarships were awarded to Ms. Bishop and Mr. Campos. Ms. Bishop will attend Radford-University – Carilion to become a Physician’s Assistant. Mr. Campos will attend Virginia Western Community College and also become a Physician’s Assistant.
And finally, a $5,000 scholarship was awarded Uyen Tran, who plans to study Dentistry at the University of Virginia.
Kiwanis Club of Roanoke is extremely grateful to American National Bank, Pinnacle Financial Partners, Kiwanis Club of Roanoke members, and Pancake & Auction Day ticket purchasers for providing financial support to these Star Students!
