The T.G. Howard Community Center Inc. (TGHCC) is highlighting one of its junior volunteers, Stephen Tyree Charity, who has participated in the Back-to-School program by preparing book bags/backpacks for distribution.
Stephen is a 3rd grader at Pulaski Elementary School and has been awarded several academic awards in all of his courses. When it comes to school, he feels that he “learns something interesting every single day and feels that it is important to “make good grades and be kind to others.” His favorite subject is math and in his free time he enjoys Minecraft, Legos, Madden football, and reading. While volunteering at the TGHCC, his parents brought Stephen along with them and he made a conscientious decision to continue. His father stated that Stephen is very insightful and responsible child and he felt that it was “important that Stephen is taught responsibility and becomes aware of the need to help and be kind to other.”
Other than his parents, Stephen states that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has made a great impression on him. “Dr. King helped make it possible for everyone to be treated fairly.”
He displays this belief in his own life by making a difference in his community. He recently started distributing copies of The Roanoke Tribune to several families and members of local churches in the Pulaski community. This is his way of giving back to the community and making them aware of what is going on in the African American community.
As for his future, his goal is to be an archaeologist or a professional soccer player. “I like physical sports,” he commented. With his current mindset, he is truly going to be able to accomplish whatever his heart desires.
The T. G. Howard Community Center will continue to watch and support this young talented gentleman as well as others in the community.
