On November 22, the Beta Chi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., capped off a productive fall by inducting general member, Miss Andolyn Medina, into the sorority. Miss Medina is a Hollins University senior and the newly crowned “Miss Roanoke Valley.” As part of her membership process, Miss Medina coordinated a food drive at Hollins, as well as at the High Street Baptist Church. The contributions to the drive were donated to the food pantry missions at Positive Impact Ministries and High Street Baptist. Renee Bethel is chairman of the Membership Committee.
The sorority kicked off the fall season by sponsoring the “bouncy houses” at the Henry Street Festival, as well as an arts and craft booth. Members of the sorority also volunteered at the Senior Extravaganza at the Salem Civic Center, sponsored by Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley. Beta Chi Omega continued volunteering by participating in both the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk.
On October 24, the Chapter partied with a purpose at its Evening of Elegance dinner dance at the Roanoke Country Club. As members and guests danced the night away to the beats of “So Sophisticated Soundz” and “Upscale Band and Show.” Proceeds from that event will benefit the chapter’s scholarships and community service projects. Joyce Bolden is chairman of the 2015 Fundraising Committee.
