Some area retirees are working together to create a privately owned home community designed to offer an inventive answer for longer independent living. The planned SpiritServ development is the first of its kind in Roanoke with a co-housing solution that includes a community building for visiting guests and resident group activities as well as a campus created with seniors in mind.
Envisioned as a faith-based ecumenical residential alternative for people age 55+, home selections and the site design are geared toward those determined to age with grace. Eight are committed to homes with a deposit. Ten are needed to purchase the currently City-owned Cove Road land intended for this initiative. Thirty units are planned for this lot of approximately six acres, with twenty earmarked as privately owned homes and the remainder intended as rentals.
The idea for the project was borne from Wyar’s determination to come up with a better, low maintenance, more comfortable and neighborly solution for aging individuals, utilizing solar power to lower energy their bills. These are people who may have challenges maintaining a large home but could benefit from an independent living solution where resources are shared and privately owned homes are designed to be quite affordable and accessible despite challenges that may come from deteriorating health. The co-housing concept allows people to retreat to their own homes for privacy, but encourages and facilitates daily interaction among the residents.
