Night at the Races attendees lineup to place bets with their “funny (fake) money.”

If you’ve ever driven miles out of state to participate in horse racing, you should have been at the Holiday Inn Valley View on Saturday, June 11 when Beta Chi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. sponsored “A Nite at the Races, Inc.” as a fundraiser for its scholarship and community service programs.

Participants were given an amount of “funny money” (play money) to place bets on horses for six races. The program listed a brief description of each horse that was competing. After bets were placed, the odds were announced and exciting race videos, from actual racing events, were played. Participants cheered enthusiastically during the racing videos, Most of which were photo finishes making the activity even more exciting. Winners headed to the “bankers” to receive their payouts, which was more funny money.

At the end of the evening, participants were able to use their play money to bid in the auction of numerous valuable items, which the auction turned out to be almost as exciting as the racing. The audience eagerly competed for coveted items, often narrowing down to two competitors determined to outbid the other.

Alpha Kappa Alpha members, their guests, and friends took to the dance floor in between races. A buffet of race-friendly food was served by the venue staff. And a fun evening of friendly competition was had by all who attended. Joyce Bolden serves as the Fundraising Chairman of the chapter. Pamela Edwards is the president.
