The “Evening of Elegance” Dinner Dance highlighted a busy fall for the Beta Chi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Hunting Hills Country Club.

In addition to the melodious music provided by Emily and the Hepcats, attendants were able to bid on lavish theme baskets during the silent auction. The dinner dance was a major fundraising event for the sorority’s scholarship and community service programs. Joyce Bolden chaired the Fundraising Committee.

Members of Beta Chi Omega also recently participated in two charity walks. On October 1, members joined others in Roanoke’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the Rivers’ Edge Sports Complex.  Sorority members then returned to Rivers’ Edge on October 22 to participate in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk.  The Alzheimer’s Association and the AHA are international partners with Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Beta Chi Omega sponsored a Zumba Fitness Party on October 1at the High Street Baptist Church Community Center that benefited TAP’s Sabrina’s Place. A number of popular Roanoke Valley instructors and an enthusiastic crowd made the event fun for all in attendance.

Members also volunteered at the Mental Health America of the Roanoke Valley’s Senior Extravaganza on September 28 at the Salem Civic Center. This senior adult event features mini-seminars, health screenings, a technology mall, pharmacy consults, lunch (for the first 400 participants) and entertainment. AKA’s provided the majority of volunteers for this event.

Sorority members kicked off the fall season by providing a children’s activity during the Henry Street Festival on September 17. Children were able to create colorful tote bags and were given a snack to put in them.

Carla Shepherd is the program director and vice president. Cleo Kitt is the Health Promotions chairman and Pamela Edwards is the chapter president.
