The Roanoke Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity held its annual Kappa Relays Track Meet on Wednesday, March 29. The Kappa Relays is a city-wide middle school track meet that awards athletes for their athletic and academic success. Coach Sherley Stuart and the late Coach Rudy Dillard helped start this event in the 1980s.
Participants from Roanoke City middle school track teams included Breckinridge, James Madison, Lucy Addison, Woodrow Wilson and Jackson. Student athletes competed in the following events:
long jump – 1st Place females: Wilson – 1st Place Males: Breckinridge; triple jump, 1st Place females: and – 1st Place males: Madison; shot put – 1st Place females: Breckinridge; 1st Place males: Madison; 4 x 100 M Relay, 1st Place females: Madison – 1st Place males: Breckinridge; 4 x 200 M Relay – 1st Place females: and 1st Place males: Madison; 4 x 400 M Relay – 1st Place females: 1st Place males: Breckinridge; 4 x 800 M Relay – 1st Place females; Breckinridge – 1st Place males: Madison; 1600 Distance Sprint Medley, – 1st Place females: and 1st Place males: Madison; Overall 1st Place females: and Overall 1st Place males: Madison.
The overall team winners for the boy’s and girl’s team was James Madison. In addition to track and field events, male and female athletes from each team were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements.
