It doesn’t get more precious than putting a smile on a child’s face. Sponsored by Aladdin Temple #111 for the last eight years countless inner city kids have benefitted from the annual Christmas party organized by Apple Ridge Farm (ARF). This year (Dec. 19) dozens of children and their parents showed up.

The mission of Apple Ridge Farm is “to transform the lives of our community’s underserved children and families through engagement in unparalleled education, cultural and outdoor experiences.”

Founder Peter Lewis wanted to make this event among the best to date and with the help of others he feels that he ultimately did just that. A staple in the community for decades, over the last 35 years 60,000 plus youth have attended the Apple Ridge Farm Summer Camp. Many are either currently in college or have already graduated with a degree.

Attendees were treated to a pizza and other favorites, a free picture with Santa Claus and inspirational words from Peter Lewis and others. In the past kids received bicycles. This year those who qualified received electronic tablets donated by Aladdin Temple #111.

“We have a special summer camp that teaches little shorties how to program computers,” said Lewis.

“We hope that our kids get more involved with science, engineering, technology and math.” A parent of four added, “I can’t afford devices like this to assist my kids with their school work…I’m so thankful.” Also an Apple Ridge Farm donation was made courtesy of Aladdin Temple before the kids received their gifts.

Tens of thousands of kids in the state of Virginia go without receiving a single gift during the holidays. The beauty of this annual gathering is that every child receives a gift of some kind. Sherman Taylor, Illustrious Potentate of the Aladdin Temple, said “We’ve been doing this for quite some time and we want to continue.”

This event is not just another opportunity to give to the less fortunate but to the many families who have directly benefitted over the years it means so much more.

“Because of this event all of my kids have gotten a gift over the last three years,” said one emotional parent. More than just lip service is needed to truly make a difference. The collaborative actions of Apple Ridge Farm, Aladdin Temple #111 and countless volunteers have once again had a profound impact on the community during this special season of giving.
