The 57th annual Chums, Inc. National Conclave, “Rock the Boat 2,” was held October 30-November 3 aboard the Enchantment of the Seas, Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship with 231 Chums, Hums, and guests in attendance.
In Keeping with the Chums National theme, “Listen to the children…enrich their lives, chapters collectively donated $115,845 for child centered projects with three chapters receiving special recognition for their projects. The Atlanta, GA Chapter hosted a Symposium on Human Trafficking on the campus of Spellman College co-hosted by Spellman’s Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Over 150 college students from all over the metropolitan area were in attendance. Human trafficking of minors has become an epidemic nationwide.
The New York Chapter partnered with the Westbury Methodist Church on a multifaceted umbrella program, the “Village Project” which served youth from pre-school to middle school age children.
The St. Louis, MO. Chapter volunteered with Voices of Children CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), the program represents over 800 foster children in the foster care system in St Louis City and County. The volunteers give support by representing the children in court and speaking up for their needs.
The National organization awarded $5,000 to the United Negro College Fund, $5,000 to the Children’s Defense Fund, and a $5,000 college scholarship to Natasha Phipps from Orlando, FL.
The Chums is a National organization comprised of 36 chapters in the continental United States. The organization promotes civic, cultural, educational and social improvement focusing on enriching the lives of children.
