The 56th annual Chums, Inc. conclave “Doin the Charleston,” was celebrated in Charleston, SC, October 20-23, as 325 Chums, Hums and guests were entertained in true Lowcountry southern hospitality with Gullah cuisine and good times.
With the Chums national theme, “Listen to the Children, Enriching their Lives,” three chapters received special recognition for their projects. The Atlanta Chapter had a symposium for youth on knowing your rights and how to react when being confronted by law enforcement. The Fairfield Conn. Chapter involved youth in public speaking and the Hampton Newport News Chapter worked with the juvenile courts to mentor young women in common sense activities.
The National organization awarded a total of $17,000 to the following: Black and Missing Children, Back Pack Program, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Sickle Cell Foundation, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, and educational scholarships to college bound seniors.
Roanokers attending the conclave were President Chum Evie Brandon and Hum Robert, Chum Francine McLaughlin and Hum Sterling, Chum Marzetta Sinkler and guest Betty Kolb.
