Church Women United (CWU-RV) is proud to announce that Sue Ranson has been named the recipient of the 2025 Valiant Woman Award. This honor is reserved for women who demonstrate a lifelong commitment to the Gospel through service to their church, the CWU organization, and the broader community. A “Valiant Woman” is a woman who lives the Gospel message in her everyday life.
These attributes certainly describe Ranson, a woman of deep faith who has dedicated over 45 years to the service of the Roanoke Valley. As a nurse, co-founder of Good Samaritan Hospice, and a community leader, she embodies the CWU Motto: “Agreed to Differ, Resolved to Love, United to Serve.” A “gentle, Christ-like spirit” defines her leadership. The way Sue lives her life is a testament to her acknowledgement of, love for, acceptance of, and respect for all of God’s children.
Since joining CWU in 2019, Sue has served with “patience and a can-do spirit.” As president, she has presided over a period of significant growth, both in membership and in the unit’s service to the community. She is described by those who have served on the Board with her as a person who leads by example, fosters an inclusive environment where every “sister” feels seen, heard, and valued, is committed to justice for all, is loving and kind and is knowledgeable, understanding and committed to excellence.
Sue’s devotion to God remains at the center of her service. At First Church of the Brethren, she faithfully served as a deacon, choir member, and teacher. Following the difficult dissolution of the congregation this year, Sue has been instrumental in the healing process. She maintains connection through a weekly newsletter, coordinates worship opportunities and provides information for online access for the homebound and is always genuinely willing to help others.
To know Sue Ranson is to love Sue. She exudes love in all she does. Her colleagues and sisters-in-faith describe her as a woman who “walks the talk” with grace, strength, and empathy. It was with great honor and unanimous enthusiasm that Sue Ranson was awarded the recipient of the 2025 Valiant Woman Award.
