CommUNITY ARTSReach is a Roanoke-based nonprofit committed to building a stronger, more inclusive community through arts education, mentorship and cultural programming. On Dec. 7, at its event center, the organization hosted “Black Nativity,” an original production featuring the work of Langston Hughes.
The leader of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes is one of America’s greatest social activists, novelists and playwrights ever. Born in 1901, the early innovator of jazz poetry studied at Columbia University in New York City.
“This is our ninth year doing this. Before the event center, it took place at First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke and St. Paul Church on 5th Street,” CommUNITY ARTSreach Founder Bernadette “BJ” Lark said. “Sunday’s event was standing room only, and the community turned out in full force. Regardless of venue, it’s always the same audience, but different people.”
Original productions are important to the community, especially when they honor historic figures like Hughes.
“We get a lot of requests for unique content, but we don’t have the infrastructure to always do so,” Lark said. “We are all about providing a rich, cultural experience. Our youth get an opportunity to showcase their talents, which does wonders for their confidence. I have so many fond memories of this annual event over the years.”
She added, “We just welcomed two new additions – CARE Events Plaza and Nurturing Roots Co-op – both located at 3025 Frontier Road. These additions will help expand our impact by providing space, resources and opportunities that keep our work rooted in love and accessible to all.”
In addition to BJ, the brass of the organization consists of Musical Director Deron Lark, Secretary Cathy Carter, Treasurer Pam Banks and Polly Branch, a social justice advocate.
“At CommUNITY ARTSreach, we believe in the power of the arts to uplift, heal, and unite. We envision a future where every young person has access to creative opportunities, free from violence and oppression,” Lark said. “Through partnerships, education, and hands-on arts engagement, we empower youth to be leaders and changemakers in their communities.”
