The first meeting of the Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. was held with Continental Angels Club members on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Gainsboro Library from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  This is a group of girls (ages 7-18) mentored by the Continentals every fourth Saturday to incorporate various components of the organization’s HEER (Health, Education, Employment, Recreation) and Arts & Humanities  program.

Continental Hazel Jones introduced the girls to the “Vision Board” entitled “Me and what I’d like to be.” Each had to focus on themselves and what they would like to be by incorporating the words-love, joy, courage and kindness.  To create the board, they cutout pictures from magazines and placed them on poster boards with a self portrait in the center.

The Health Committee, chaired by Loretta Freeman, encouraged the girls to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative. This group’s priority is to combat childhood obesity by instilling healthy alternatives. Last year the focus was on healthy eating and drinking more water.

This year the Continentals are partnering with the local Anthem Blue Cross /Blue Shield organization, supplier of the participant’s pedometers in their Steps Challenge. The girls were given pedometers and log sheets to keep track of their daily steps.  Each quarter, prizes will be given to the girls who have logged in the most steps and grand prizes will be given at the end of the program in June.

Continentals Natalie Bonilla and Hazel Jones are co-chairs of the Continental Angels Club. Donna W. Lee is president of the local chapter.
