On Wednesday, March 18 Dr. Randolph L. (Randy) Grayson returned to the campus of Virginia Tech. Dr. Renee Boyer, Director of the George Washington Carver Graduate Assistantship Program and longtime colleague of Dr. Grayson invited him to provide a lecture to program members and guests. As founding director of this program, Dr. Grayson’s inspiring lecture recalled childhood and early education experiences that stimulated and fueled his journey in science. Thankful to teachers and role models who encouraged and supported him, in turn, his career has been committed to helping students navigate obstacles that appear while they pursue their own education and careers in the sciences.

Dr. Grayson’s legacy at Virginia Tech is defined by a rare synthesis of scientific precision and social advocacy. As a Professor Emeritus of plant pathology and a specialist in electron microscopy, Grayson spent his career examining the minute details of the natural world. However, an enduring discovery was not found under a lens, but in the structural barriers hindering segments of students in their quest for success in higher education.
He recalled childhood years and conversations with his great-grandfather. Henry Thomas Randolph, who had been born a slave in Virginia before making his way to Iowa. Lessons from those conversations and observing his parents navigate hindering trials helped develop the resilience which would later serve him so well in life.
Dr. Grayson grew up in Albia, IA. His education includes: a B.S. from Iowa State University, Iowa City IA; M.A. Washington University, St. Louis MO and Ph.D Michigan State University, East Lansing MI.
Tracing his path from the challenges of childhood to his tenure at Virginia Tech, Grayson often speaks of the obstacles that could have derailed his career. These personal experiences became the roadmap for his advocacy. He understood that talent is distributed equally, but opportunity is not. This realization hit a turning point in 1992; while attending a national conference, he noticed that out of thousands of scientists, only a handful were Black. Rather than accepting this as the status quo, Grayson returned to Blacksburg with a vision to build a new kind of academic architecture and began steps that founded the Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program, now enlarged as the Mentoring & Academic Outreach Programs. This initiative was innovative, moving beyond financial aid to provide a “holistic pipeline” of mentoring, GRE preparation, and research internships. Under his guidance, these programs have supported several thousand underserved students, bridging the gap between undergraduate potential and graduate-level achievement.
Grayson’s commitment to advancing opportunities extended to his leadership and founding of the George Washington Carver Graduate Assistantship Program. His recruitment efforts at HBCUs and throughout Appalachia transformed Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) into the third-ranked program in the nation for diversity. All in attendance had appreciation for his wise words and strong advice, “don’t quit – keep moving forward.”
His decades of service culminated in the 2017 Presidential Principles of Community Award, recognizing a career dedicated to the Virginia Tech motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). Today, the Randolph L. Grayson Outstanding CALS Diversity Scholar Award stands as a permanent tribute to a man who did not just study the health of organisms, but worked tirelessly to ensure the health and inclusivity of the entire academic ecosystem. Dr. Grayson proved that true scientific progress is only possible when the “brain power” of every student, regardless of background, is welcomed into the lab.
Dr. Grayson and his wife, Joan have three children and live in Christiansburg where they are active members of Asbury United Methodist Church along with many community service organizations.
