Karim Thompson recently retired as a first lieutenant with the Roanoke Fire EMS Department. Since then, many have thanked him for his years of public service, both in person and across various social media platforms.
“Throughout his career, Karim has served with dedication and professionalism. Beyond the fire service, he was also a standout member in the community,” the department said in a statement.
“My husband has officially retired, and I’m so thankful for his selflessness,” Thompson’s wife, Trista, wrote on Facebook. “A big thank you to the fire department that became family and supported my husband all those years.”
Becoming a successful professional is something that Thompson always knew was within reach. After graduating from Northside High School in 1995, the standout athlete accepted a football scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. That year, he was involved in an auto accident, which resulted in him needing surgery for a broken arm and jaw.
“While attempting to make a left turn onto Virginia 419 from Brambleton Avenue in Roanoke County, I was struck by another vehicle. If I hadn’t been wearing my seat belt, I would have flown through the window,” Thompson has publicly stated on the record.
Once his football dreams were derailed, Thompson’s desire to become the best firefighter motivated him tremendously. Prior to earning the rank of first lieutenant, he served as a frontline firefighter, obtained an EMT license and passed a competitive promotional exam, among other things.
Thompson’s envolved with the Roanoke Rampage, in addition to his community leadership, earned him induction into the National Public Safety Football League Hall of Fame last year.
“Karim joined the Roanoke Rampage in 2009 and quickly became the heart of the defense, while also contributing as a versatile running back. A respected leader and mentor, he appeared in more than 40 games, tied for the most in Rampage history. His reliability, dedication and impact on team culture made him a cornerstone,” said the organization in a public statement.
The outpouring of support given to Thompson is typically reserved for those who have made a real impact on their community.
Thompson’s journey from promising athlete to lieutenant firefighter is proof that one can accomplish great things if they surround themselves with the right people and are willing to stay the course, even when obstacles present themselves.
“I will always cherish all my years serving my community and building long-lasting friendships with my fire family,” he said. “I am grateful for all the texts and calls that I have received. I will be forever grateful for this career and look forward to the next chapter.”
