On the Trump Administration’s Constitutional violations, economic injustice, environmental harm, and misuse of religion
As faith leaders dedicated to justice, truth, and the well-being of our community, the Baptist Ministers Conference issues this formal statement to address and condemn the actions of the Trump administration. We do so out of moral conviction and a commitment to uphold the values of democracy, the dignity of all people, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our words are meant to guide, inform, and inspire the local community and fellow faith leaders to resist policies and practices that threaten the foundations of our society and the ideals of the Beloved Community. As the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” We recognize this as a Bonhoeffer moment, when the church is required to both speak and act in revolutionary, countercultural ways to resist the incursion of evil.
Constitutional Concerns
We condemn the administration’s repeated violations of constitutional boundaries. These include foreign military incursions without proper congressional oversight, the use of military force against civilians within our own nation, and clear breaches of the emoluments clause. The president’s personal enrichment and the accumulation of wealth by his family during his time in office reflect a disregard for constitutional principles and ethical governance. Such actions undermine the integrity of our democracy and erode public trust in its institutions. We deny the false allegations of the extreme right and its selective use of gerrymandering to further enhance the power of this administration. We further endorse the temporary use of redistricting as a necessary response to partisan gerrymandering until such time as normalcy can restored in our democratic process.
Economic Critique
The Trump administration has exacerbated the widening wealth gap and deepened the affordability crisis facing millions of Americans. Through tax breaks favoring the wealthy and large corporations, the economic policies of this era have prioritized profit and privilege over the needs of working families and marginalized communities. The result is a society where opportunity is hoarded, and the promise of economic justice is denied to those who need it most. We advocate for the equal distribution of resources and opportunities based upon need. We deny the false meritocracy promoted by this administration which is based on race, class, and nepotism. We affirm the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., who believed that a nation should be judged by its commitment to equality, justice, and the inherent worth of every person, not by superficial or discriminatory criteria. This aligns with the words of Jesus, who declared that “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me (Matthew 25:40).’”
Environmental and Scientific Issues
We further denounce the administration’s environmental policies, which have inflicted lasting harm on God’s creation and ignored scientific facts. Resistance to climate science and the promotion of ignorance for political gain threaten not only our planet, but also the lives of future generations. Stewardship of the earth is a biblical imperative, and the purposeful neglect of this duty is a grave moral failure. We also affirm that science is the best guide regarding health care in our country, and not conspiracy theories. Again, Martin Luther King reminds us, “Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”
Religious Imagery and Language
We are deeply troubled by the misuse of religious imagery and language to justify racism, brutality, violence, and war. The president’s verbal attacks on the Pope and the use of AI-generated depictions of himself as a Jesus-like figure are blasphemous and distort the Christian faith for political ends. Such actions promote division, reinforce prejudice, and corrupt the sacred message of love, mercy, and justice. We further condemn the actions of and pray for the repentance of those ministers who by their presence implicitly or explicitly endorse this perversion of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Theological and Biblical Critique
From a theological and biblical perspective, we reject the administration’s transactional approach to alliances, treaties, and power. This philosophy, rooted in self-interest and dominance, stands in stark contrast to the ideals that advance humanity, democracy, and the Kingdom of God. Augustinian theory teaches that the Kingdom of Man pursues earthly power and selfish gain, while the Kingdom of God embodies compassion, humility, and justice. The Trump administration’s ideology and methodology represent the antithesis of the Beloved Community—a vision where all are valued, and peace and equity prevail. The president and his administration seek retaliation rather than reconciliation. They celebrate the lethality of our military rather than our ability to safeguard life. They threaten genocide as a negotiation tool rather than negotiation to avoid genocide. We condemn and will not condone this inversion of Christian values.
Condemnation and Conclusion
In conclusion, we thoroughly condemn the Trump administration’s ideology, theology, and methodology. Their actions and policies are fundamentally opposed to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the prophetic tradition of justice. They stand in direct contradiction to the vision of the Beloved Community and the Kingdom of God, as articulated by Augustine and affirmed by generations of faith leaders. The Church was born in opposition to empire. The Black church was born in the struggle against racism, slavery, and oppression. The church’s finest hour in this nation’s history has been in its opposition to authoritarianism and as a champion for civil and human rights. We call upon all who seek justice to reject these practices, to stand for truth, and to build a society rooted in love, equality, and the pursuit of righteousness.
