The dining scene in downtown Roanoke is constantly evolving. In the coming weeks, a new addition will have its grand opening at a familiar location.
According to its Facebook page, “The Haven is an urban social escape — a place to pause, gather and recharge. Good food, crafted drinks and a setting that makes you forget the grind for a while.”
For years, Awful Arthur’s was a staple at 108 Campbell Avenue. Amy Dornton, a longtime Roanoke Valley resident, is spearheading the effort to transform the vacant building into a vibrant new eatery at the same location.
“I am thrilled to finally let people know of our plans,” she posted on Instagram. “The Haven name was about a place to escape. Whatever that means for you. Whether that is social, good food, taking some time out to have a date night, which we don’t always get with busy lives and especially, if you have children.”
Dornton says that The Haven will differ from Awful Arthur’s, even as she works alongside the original owners to maintain the ambience. While the outside of the building will have a familiar look, when people step inside, they will notice some big changes, including a new bar top.
Once open, people can expect many of the American classics on the menu – macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs.
Whenever a new restaurant opens in Roanoke, Alex Lee makes it a point to visit it at least once. “From experience, I can say that the best restaurants have three things in common – high-quality food, detail-oriented customer service and a certain level of cleanliness. I’m excited to see what The Haven has to offer,” Lee said.
Many business owners measure success solely by how much money is generated. For Dornton, she wants to provide a dining experience that captures the soul.
People continue to post on social media that when The Haven has its grand opening, they will be there to take it all in. “The Haven is bringing new life to the corner where Awful Arthur’s used to be. Can’t wait to see what they have in store and we’re looking forward to stopping by once they open,” said one user.
“When I heard that Amy and Jarod were opening a new business, I got excited. They are great people, and I know they will be a welcomed addition to the community,” wrote another.
All signs point to The Haven officially opening by the end of the year.
