As a steward of the land, I believe one of our greatest responsibilities is to protect the places that sustain us. That responsibility extends beyond our homes and neighborhoods. It includes the water we drink, the air we breathe, the trees that cool our communities, and the generations who will inherit the decisions we make today.
Over the past several years, I have had the privilege of participating in community efforts focused on environmental health and climate resilience. I was part of the H.O.P.E. (Healing Our People with Empathy) for Heat Resilience initiative, a collaborative partnership involving community organizations, the City of Roanoke, and researchers from Virginia Tech. Together, we worked to raise awareness about urban heat islands and how the design of our neighborhoods influences public health, quality of life, and environmental equity. (Heat2Hope)
That experience reinforced something I have come to believe deeply: environmental issues are rarely isolated. The way we develop our communities affects our health, our natural resources, and the future we leave behind.
Today, another issue deserves that same level of public conversation: the rapid expansion of data centers.
Let me be clear. I am not opposed to technology. Technology has transformed education, medicine, communication, and business in remarkable ways. My concern is not technology itself. My concern is the belief that growth should continue without asking where the limits are.
How many data centers are enough?
At what point do we pause and ask whether continued expansion serves the long-term interests of our communities?
These are not questions rooted in fear. They are questions rooted in stewardship.
Every major development leaves a footprint. Data centers require land. They consume significant amounts of water for cooling. They demand enormous amounts of electricity. Their construction changes landscapes that once absorbed rainfall, supported wildlife, and provided natural cooling. These realities deserve thoughtful public discussion alongside conversations about economic development.
The questions before us are straightforward.
What is the long-term impact on our water resources?
What happens to our forests and farmland as development expands?
How will increased energy demand shape our future?
What responsibilities do we have to the communities that will live with these decisions for decades?
These questions cannot be separated from conversations about urban heat islands, tree loss, public health, or environmental resilience. They are part of the same story. When we treat them as isolated issues, we miss the larger picture.
Many Indigenous traditions teach that human beings exist in relationship with the Earth rather than apart from it. Land, water, plants, animals, and people form one living system. When one part of that system is neglected, every other part eventually feels the effects.
Whether someone embraces that worldview or not, the principle of interconnection is increasingly reflected in environmental research and planning. Healthy ecosystems contribute to healthier communities, and thoughtful stewardship benefits everyone.
Asking difficult questions about development does not make someone anti-technology or anti-progress. It demonstrates a willingness to think beyond the next project and consider the next generation.
Economic development and environmental stewardship do not have to compete with one another. They can move together when decisions are guided by balance instead of excess.
As Roanoke and the surrounding region continue to grow, I hope we measure success not only by what we build, but also by what we preserve. Our legacy will be defined by the choices we make today and whether those choices honor both innovation and responsibility.
