Roanoke – Hundreds of local students started the school year prepared thanks to a community giveaway hosted by Haley Toyota of Roanoke on Friday, August 15.
In partnership with Lincoln Terrace Elementary School, Haley Toyota distributed 400 backpacks filled with essential school supplies. The effort was part of Toyota’s nationwide Big Summer Giveback program in partnership with the Kids In Need Foundation (KINF).
For many students in Roanoke and across the nation, starting school without proper supplies is the norm. According to KINF, more than two out of three students in underserved communities arrive on the first day of school without the basics they need to learn. The giveaway aimed to close that gap.
“Haley Toyota and its employees were proud to partner with Toyota in providing book bags and school supplies to the students of Lincoln Terrace Elementary School,” said Chuck Baker, Partner and General Manager of Haley Toyota of Roanoke. “Seeing the faces of pre-K to 5th grade students made the event worthwhile.”
More than 20 Haley Toyota employees volunteered their time to personally hand out the backpacks, ensuring that every child walked away ready for the first day of school.
“Having the right supplies makes a meaningful difference for both students and teachers,” added Corey Gordon, CEO of the Kids In Need Foundation. “We’re not just helping families prepare for the school year, we’re helping ensure equity in access to learning.”
The Roanoke event was one of dozens held nationwide by Toyota dealerships. In total, 77,000 students across the U.S. received backpacks through the program this year. Since the initiative began in 2022, more than 200,000 students have been supported through KINF’s Supply A Student program.
Haley Toyota’s efforts extended beyond the giveaway. From August 1 through September 2, Toyota pledged to donate $3.00 to KINF for every eligible oil change with a tire rotation at participating Toyota Service Centers. Customers also had the opportunity to make direct contributions at kinf.org/toyota.
“We are looking into possibly including other Roanoke City schools in the future,” added Baker. “Supporting our local schools is one of the best ways we can give back to our community, and we’re proud to be part of a program that helps students start the year prepared and confident.”
